About Me
About Me
While completing my BA in Music from NUI Maynooth, I developed an interest in the inner workings of pianos and went on to obtain a BSc in Musical Instrument Technology from London Metropolitan University (previous names were the London College of Furniture and London Guildhall University).
Studying under John-Paul Williams in this well known and respected course, I gained knowledge and experience in not only Piano Tuning and Repairing but also Acoustics; Instrument History; Scales, Tunings and Temperaments; and Materials Science.
While studying and in the following years my technical know-how was augmented with an insight into the retail world of pianos while employed at Harrods of London. During my employment I also honed my customer service skills and was presented with an award for Exemplary Customer Service by the Director of Retail Sales and the Chairman of Harrods.
Further tuning and technical skills were obtained while working for Yamaha-Kemble at their piano manufacturing plant in Milton Keynes. Here I learned the importance of, and mastered an ability to work under pressure in the sector of piano tuning. Versatility was also key as I was regularly moved to different areas within the manufacturing process.
Following a return to Ireland, I began my employment with Chris Jackson of The Piano Gallery in south county Carlow. My years with The Piano Gallery broadened my knowledge of different brands of pianos and strengthened my ability to trouble-shoot issues with pianos in clients’ homes and institutions. The one-to-one element that I experienced with my clients in their homes and schools confirmed and cemented my enthusiasm for my career.
In 2013 I passed a test which included tuning, repairs and action regulation to become a member of the Pianoforte Tuners’ Association. I am (currently) the youngest member and one of only a handful in the Republic of Ireland.
Every piano is different and often I am faced with interesting challenges, some that I may have never previously encountered. I relish these challenges and enjoy learning more and more about this wonderful instrument all the time.
